A look at ZSW’s research platform for the industrial production of large lithium-ion cells

International Ulm ElectroChemical Talks on July 20 and 21

The world’s leading experts on batteries and fuel cells convene every two years at the Ulm ElectroChemical Talks (UECT) to discuss the industry’s latest developments. Slated to take place on July 20 and 21, 2016, this year’s event will be attended by big-name players. Delegates from BMW, Daimler, Honda, Porsche, Samsung, Tesla, Varta and other prominent companies are taking this opportunity to talk about the future of key e-mobility technologies. The UECT’s focus topics this year are the lifetime and safety of electrochemical energy technologies. The Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) is hosting the conference in Ulm and Blaubeuren.

The agenda offers intriguing presentations and plenty of opportunities for more than 300 representatives from science and automotive manufacturers and suppliers to exchange views. Details and registration forms are available at uect.de

More than 1.3 million electric vehicles are now motoring on roads worldwide. Powered by batteries, fuel cells or hybrid technology, this vanguard is leading the drive towards sustainable mobility. And its advance is changing the global automotive industry. With e-cars rapidly taking a bigger share of the market, the lifetime and safety aspects of new electrochemical energy technologies are becoming an ever more important factor for the long-term success of e-mobility.

“High-performance batteries and fuel cells are the key to a successful transition to e-mobility and exit from fossil fuels,” says Prof. Werner Tillmetz, conference chairman and member of ZSW’s board of directors. “The 15th Ulm ElectroChemical Talks tie together the full range of topics from fundamental research and lessons learned in daily use to manufacturing issues.”

Presentations, seminars and exhibitions

The agenda calls for eight presentation sessions with some 40 experts from China, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea and the USA slated to report on new materials, better components and practical experiences. Poster exhibitions will also figure prominently, and there will be many opportunities for discussions in a casual setting.

Seminars on lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen technologies slated for July 19 at the Ulm Science Park will afford insights into fundamentals and current research priorities. Attendees can also tour the new hydrogen filling station, the ZSW Laboratory for Battery Technology (eLaB), its safety testing center and pilot manufacturing line.

Pilot production of battery cells

The eLaB’s pilot plant develops state-of-the-art manufacturing processes for the battery cells of the future based on the latest advances in research. Beyond that, it also manufactures new cell technologies in small-scale production runs and tests these cells in vehicles. “We have created a unique research platform with our pilot plant. It offers research and industry partners a wide range of possibilities to ramp up future products,” says Tillmetz. Batteries and fuel cells are the heart of e-vehicles and they account for a big share of the value-add.
